This seems to be ane of those recipes where anything you lot desire to throw into the pot is acceptable. As long as the stop product tastes good, the endevour has been a success. Several of the reviews mentioned that the "pie" was banal. This was my clue to expermient. So I put in some things to give it a kick. First I added a can of cream corn (cause I really like corn) every bit several reviewers mentioned and I used mushroom soup instead of veggy soup, and so three cloves of finely cutting garlic. In the potatoes, I added milk and a Large tablespoon of creamy horseradish sauce (anything with the word horse in it should requite it a "kick"). I added a dash or two of worchestershire sauce and a nuance or three of garlic salt. I tossed in a can of white beans (this one gave information technology a real boost and I highly recommend concidering the beans as an additive). I besides used more than the three cups of potatoes. I used three expert sized russet potatoes. I have no idea what Colby longhorn cheese is, so I had some medium chedar that I used. The end product of this batter was absolutely delicious! My married woman, who is kinda pickey, had three helpings and I had four. Betwixt the two of us we ate 3 quarters of the "pie" at one sitting!! This was really, really good and total of cracking flavors. Cheers Lisa for a cracking recipe idea.

This is truly the best Shepherd's pie we've e'er had! I more than doubled the recipe and used almost 3lbs of hamburg. I used a little less thyme then information technology called for and used condensed gold mushroom soup. I totally forgot to add the onion and celery while cooking the burger, so I sauteed them in a lilliputian butter afterward and added information technology to the burger & soup mix. I layered the hamburger, so corn, so the potatoes and WOW, information technology was so good! At that place were 4 adults (very hungry ones!) and the entire 9x13 pan was gone. My dad said it was the best he ever had...fifty-fifty better then my mom'due south (which is saying a lot!) I'grand making it over again for Sunday football...hope there'due south enough! Thanks for the great recipe!
02/xiv/2003
I dear shepherd'due south pie, simply the rest of my crew could probably do without, then this review is all my own. I like this recipe becasue information technology is your "basic" shepherd's pie recipe, and then you tin can add together or accept abroad what yous like. I spruced upwards my meat mixture a little more past calculation chopped bell pepper, canned tomatoes and garlic to my ground meat. It makes it a little heartier, and I like to season my mashed potatoes with some garlic and onion pulverization. I don't measure out the cheese...I but throw lots and lots on top. I would definitely recommed using this recipe as your foundation, then play effectually with it. Thanks Lisa.

Discovered this recipe a while dorsum, and this has go one of our favorite dishes. I add at least another onion and tons of garlic to the browning meat. I also use lots more than vegatables (frozen stir-fry veggies give information technology a fun, interesting, and piece of cake heave) and two cans of vegitable soup because I make a big bunch of information technology. I e'er utilize instant pototoes (SO much faster than the other kind and I can't really tell a differenc) and pour on the thyme because I dear the unique flavour. I also pile on the cheese--because I dearest it! My family loves this, and I make plenty to accept leftovers. The best thing, though, is that you can totally change/add/remove anything you want!
06/05/2002
This was delicious. Equally I was using i 1/2 lbs. ground beef, I increased the onion to 2/3 cup and left the celery at1/2 cup. Simply make sure celery and onion are cooked through. I also used two cans condensed vegetable beef soup and I added virtually a loving cup of frozen peas and carrots, which I cooked first. I only sprinkled on a little bit of thyme. Used lots of potatoes. Family loved information technology.

I never even heard of Shepard's Pie, only I idea I'd give it a effort. The recipe has turned out great every fourth dimension I've made it. I've fifty-fifty made it with boxed mashed potatoes and it nevertheless has a lot of dandy season. I personaly add a few more spices to the ground beef, throw in more veggies and employ a blend of cheddar/munster cheese on top instead of Colby. It really fills you lot up and is groovy for those of us who take very piddling time to melt. Even my sister-in-law, who is a chef, liked the recipe. Thank you !!
11/x/2002
I didn't like the version of this with the vegetable soup and it didn't go over well with my family unit. I'll stick with cream of mushroom soup.
07/09/2003
Heavy but tasty. I used instant potatoes and added carrots and frozen peas. I've never heard of colby longhorn cheese, then I used colby jack. Subsequently my additions, this made well-nigh 8 servings. It reheated well equally leftovers. Next time I will try cream of mushroom soup instead of the vegetable.
12/12/2002
This recipe was fantastic. I changed information technology just a picayune.I left out the thyme, and added cajun spices and italian seasoning to the ground turkey while browning it. I also added ane loving cup beef goop along with the veg. soup. I used monterey jack with jalapeno peppers. Thanks for the recipe.
12/09/2002
I also added a can of corn. An additional can of vegetables would not injure either. I besides remember fresh mushrooms would exist good in information technology. Made a peachy and hearty meal!
10/28/2002
This gets five stars for ease of preparation. I took the advice of other reviewers and threw in a few additional handfuls of frozen vegetables. I also added about 1/4 soup can of water so it would have some "gravy." Finally, I used only a smidgen of thyme and used rosemary as the main herb. Personal preference; I like rosemary in shepherd pie. Husband and I loved it.
01/27/2003
Good Stuff. I've been making this for a few years now, and my family unit and I enjoy information technology. Its easy, and tastes adept. I always add a parcel of liptons onion soup mix to the beef equally I'k browning it. It gives it more than season. We also pour a lilliputian crystals hot sauce on each of our indiviual servings to taste.
07/xvi/2010
My family loved this, to the meat I added a lot of garlic, ground pepper, and a fiddling worcestershire sauce, in place of the veggie soup, as I had none in the pantry, I used a tin of condensed french onion soup, added a bag of frozen mixed veggies and can of corn and they went berzerk over this, husband especially.....I will brand this once again and again
08/22/2002
My husband loves this recipe, he has requested it over and over and it'southward very simple to prepare. I don't add whatsoever thyme, simply because I don't care for the season and I practise use a pretty thick layer of instant mashed potatoes on acme (more than the original recipe calls for). This is a very hearty, "stick to your ribs" kind of repast. Perfect for brisk fall evenings. Thanks Lisa!
01/xiv/2003
Loved it! Husband loved it! The only affair I changed was I omitted the thyme, added some hot sauce to the footing beef as I was frying information technology and stirred in a tin of creamed corn with the soup. this is a new favourite in my business firm!
01/13/2004
With a few splashes of Worchestershire sauce and a dash or three of garlic powder, this turned out to be a really tasty, comforting dish. My husband really liked it and looks forward to having it once more.
12/30/2003
Delicious! I added some freshly chopped carrots, greenish bell peppers. I also used a few splashes of worcestershire sauce and salt & pepper (for actress flavour) to the beef mix. I as well used 4 cups mashed potatoes instead of iii. Turned out to be a huge hitting. Thank you for the neat recipe -- I'll definitely be making this again!
07/12/2006
Sorry, but I give this recipe three stars only hesitantly. For starters, fifty-fifty equally a "bones" recipe that tin can be altered to suit private tastes, salt and pepper should accept been necessary ingredients. However, my husband and son had multiple servings, but that was afterward my improver of salt, pepper, Worstershire sauce, garlic, carrots and corn. I likewise topped information technology off with bread crumbs along with the cheese. We also drizzled Louisiana hot sauce on our servings. In the terminate, my son (my nigh honest critic) told me that it needed more than vegetables, potatoes and cheese, only every bit it was, I tripled the amount of vegetables, increased the amount of potatoes to 4 cups and increased the cheese up to 1 one/4 cups. I repent for beingness negative, but I wasn't terribly impressed. Nevertheless, thank you for sharing Lisa!
09/18/2011
Then good information technology makes me say "more" with an evil grinning. My picky hubby loved it. We ate 2/3 of it in 1 sitting. Great with cornbread. Next time I would put another tin can of veggy soup with it. Thanks for the formula friend.
08/29/2005
THIS WAS A GREAT RECIPE TO Ready ON A HURRICANE Mean solar day. WE Accept 5 FOSTER CHILDREN AND THEY ALL LOVED It. PRETTY GOOD SINCE THE OLDEST One IS 6. I DID SPICE UP THE POTATOES A BIT WITH SOUR CREAM AND GARLIC AND ADDED A CAN OF MUSHROOM SOUP AND USED MIXED VEGETABLES INSTEAD OF THE SOUP Mostly Because THAT WAS WHAT I HAD BUT A 5 STAR Hit AT OUR Home
12/23/2002
This recipe was really adept, instead of using cream of vegetable, I used cream of mushroom soup, and added green beans, corn, and leftover roast from the night before. I likewise added a mixture of other spices as well the ones listed. I didn't take to double the soup even though there was a lot more food than the original recipe, and added a bit more cheese on top of the potatoes. It was delicious!
11/26/2011
I am only giving this 3 stars because with a few changes this recipe is so much better. Cook the beef and onion, leave out the celery. Use whatever cream of soup, I think it is best with cream of mushroom. Mix soup with Cooked beefiness and onion. Use this as the bottom layer. Add steamed or canned corn equally 2d layer. Mashed potatoes are the third layer. The use American cheese slices to encompass top. My late father made this when mom was away. "snow on the mountain"
07/07/2002
Freezes very well. Proficient dish to freeze and accept on hand for unexpected guests.
06/03/2010
I made this tonight and our family loved it. I added a pocket-size sprinkle of cheddar on tiptop of the armerican. And added one cup brown gravy.
07/01/2003
This was an excellent recipe. Adjacent time I will cutting out the celery, though - I thought it detracted a bit. Other than that, information technology was good - even the kids liked it, and they are at that picky phase.
01/23/2014
This has been a family favorite since I was a kid, only my mother used foam of mushroom soup, and frozen veggies, topped with shredded cheddar cheese. Today I do the, aforementioned but I use Fiesta Mexican Mix Cheese for the topping. My family unit loves it however.
11/03/2008
This is a smashing base recipe for shepherd's pie. I added a can of each cream of mushroom and cream of chicken in place of the vegetable soup. I as well added a can of corn and couple tablespoons Worcestershire sauce to the meat mixture. For the potatoes I added sour cream, milk, butter, romano cheese, and sauteed garlic and mushrooms. This was my outset tome making shepherd's pie and it was a huge success! Cheers!
12/08/2008
If yous change/add a 1000000 ingredients, you lot'll have a masterpiece, only this recipe by itself is and so-so.
01/24/2003
Piece of cake to make..... notwithstanding preparation + cooking time is more like 1 i/two hours for 1 person. I used foam of mushroom rather than cream of vegetable, and added some minced carrots and corn to the beefiness mixture. Will try using Colby cheese rather than cheddar cheese next time around!
11/xiv/2002
This was gone in 2 seconds. My family loved it and it was soooo easy to brand. I have used several dissimilar cheeses. I think whatsoever you've got would work.
09/24/2007
I've been using this recipe for a year now, and I thought I'd finally rate it. I take to double the recipe considering my family loves it. It's super easy, and appeals to the meat and potatoes fan. I use mushroom soup like the others, and likewise cooked mixed veggies (frozen). I also sprinkle with garlic salt too as the thyme.
11/03/2005
Very good. I changed the veggies around a little chip. Sauted some onions, carrots, mushrooms and some minced garlic outset. Then added dorsum in after basis beef was cooked. I used Foam of mushroom soup because I had that on manus already. It got rave reviews from my married man and my begetter.
07/28/2002
I work in a childcare heart and constitute this recipe easy to make, inexpensive to brand and the kids all loved it.
02/03/2003
When I've made this before, I saute basis beef, onion and garlic together then add a packet of frozen peas and carrots and a jar of beefiness gravy along with the spices. So I add mashed potatoes with chedder mixed into them to the meridian and bake. Afterward baking I add together some more cheese on top of the potatoes.
06/07/2003
this recipe was very good and easy to brand, i used instant potatoes instead of regular ones and information technology still was skillful but i retrieve that next time that i will use regular ones.
11/sixteen/2002
This recipe was good but did demand a little more meat and more seasonings, it was a fleck banal. My kids liked information technology and I volition make information technology again with the changes in a higher place.
eleven/12/2003
My married man LOVED this. Per others' suggestions, I used cream of mushroom soup, skipped the thyme (I don't like it much) and substituted colby jack. I cheated and used frozen prepared mashed potatoes, with sour cream and chive flavoring and all. Information technology was actually easy, and my husband is a big fan of information technology!
04/18/2006
I had to make some changes. I would suggest reducing the vegetable broth in with the meat. I used oregano instead of thyme (I get heartburn). The meat could likewise use some more flavour, maybe not lean meat since you drain the meat anyhow. This recipe needed some corn then I layered frozen corn over the meat then the mashed potatoes. I was not sure about the celery but it was GREAT in this recipe.
12/18/2003
Yummy and piece of cake! I used footing turkey and added some cooked carrots and peas. Didn't accept any veggie soup so added 1 veggie bullion cube and 1 cup h2o. Besides added 1/4 cup tomato sauce. Used the box mash potatoes for simplicity and considering they tend to exist less dense. GREAT!
eleven/17/2002
It was a flake banal. I ended upwards adding mushrooms and Velveeta cheese to the meat mixture the next time. That put a little more twist to the dish.
02/17/2013
Smashing tasting and easy recipe!!! I substituted the vegetable soup with cream of mushroom similar anybody else suggests, and instead of celery I added corn. I will be making this once more. Thanks for sharing
05/04/2005
This is a simple nevertheless hearty and tasty meal. Made a few changes as suggested by others. I seasoned up the ground beef with Tony Chachere'due south and used golden foam of mushroom instead of the vegetable soup. I too added in a can of corn and sprinkled some cheese on top of the meat mixture before putting the potatoes on (nosotros made 8 servings of instant mashed potatoes). My hubby and I actually enjoyed this and even our kids, who usually merely eat a tablespoon of anything, ate this well.
02/22/2010
Honey this recipe, neat for using up leftover mashed potatoes. I used the mushroom soup and added leftover carrots, green peppers, 2 cups of cheese and fresh garlic. I didn't use the thyme thought it would clash. Definitely a keeper.
04/15/2010
I absolutely concur with many other comments. This is a good base of operations recipe and and so add other ingredients to your liking. I added Worcestershire to the meat forth with a few other spices (pepper, garlic pulverization). I put some thawed frozen peas and carrots on the meat earlier calculation the potatoes. I used the steam and mash potatoes from the freezer section (Ore Ida brand) and they worked bang-up. Actually easy for a weekday night. I'm a huge mashed potato snob and I thought those were just fine. Just add some butter and milk and they fluff upwardly only fine. I'll exist making this one over again.
10/18/2011
followed some of the reviews and used a can of corn, a can of green beans and a can of mushroom soup instead of the veggie soup information technology says. YUMMY!
04/23/2006
I actually loked forward to making this repast for my family and it was bad. The veggie soup and thyme fabricated this meal to the signal that we couldn't eat information technology. My kids enjoyed eating the cheese off the top though.
02/13/2002
Very skilful and piece of cake to brand.
04/xix/2008
This is a wonderful recipe, very easy to make and like shooting fish in a barrel to change upward. I added mixed veggies and smashing northern beans to mine. I also used Campbells Gilt Mushroom soup (two cans). Instead of thyme I also used oregano and worcestershire sauce, but a niggling of each to spice it upwards. I will certainly be making this over again with a few more twists. I actually don't retrieve you could mess this up, anything could become in this recipe. Recreate it as many times equally yous'd like.
08/20/2007
I made quite a few changes. I used a jar of Au jus instead of the soup. I used store bought fresh mashed potatoes. I mixed the ground beef and au jus with some garlic, a dash of worchestire sauce and put in the bottom of goulash pan. And so I put a layer of frozen corn and peas, then mashed potatoes and baked. It was slap-up to have the brown gravy with the mashed potatoes!
05/06/2002
i idea this was great! i was afraid my husband would not similar information technology because he hates casseroles, and one-dish meals, merely he had seconds. and the adjacent day he even ate leftovers, which is unheardof. thank you for the great easy recipe
03/02/2013

01/08/2007
Even though several reviews said that they didn't like the thyme, I still included it because I'm quite a fan of thyme. I definitely won't the adjacent time. Thyme just does not work with the flavors in this recipe. Otherwise, the flavors were good. I used 3 lbs of basis beef, with ane tin of foam of mushroom, 1 tin of foam of celery, and most a 1/4 of a tin can of beef broth. For veggies I used a handbag of frozen mixed peas and carrots. Steam them beforehand, though, equally 30 minutes in the oven isn't enough to soften them. Mine were nevertheless crunchy.
01/22/2006
Tasted okay, but was missing something. I did not similar the gustation that the soup added to the dish. Might try to alter the recipe.
04/26/2011
I love this receipe, its very filling! I added some green and blood-red peppers and a clove of garlic. I also followed the another reviewer'southward communication and added 3T of Worchershire. I will definitely make this over again. This was great for a beginner similar me.
12/19/2012
My kids and married man liked it. I did change a few things. I seasoned the meat to my families liking which included garlic, salt, pepper and a bit of worchestire sauce. I added dark-green peppers with the meat and onions and celery. I used foam of mushroom instead and added a tin can of corn (drained) everyone liked a great quick meal with some yummy rolls or corn bread make a hearty warm meal for cold rainy Seattle days!
08/21/2011
This was pretty good as is, but if I make information technology again I will change it upwardly a fleck. I will use more veggies and my husband wanted more than meat. Other than that information technology was pretty practiced.
03/05/2013
Very easy version of Shepherd's Pie, which is but what I was looking for. I followed the recipe as written, except that I also added some leftover corn and green beans I had in the fridge. It'south a good 'cleaning out the fridge' meal!
04/10/2010
Usually canned soup gives dishes a canned, cheap sense of taste but this is a very skillful bones recipe. I add a clove of garlic and double the onion.
07/13/2008
This recipe is so good that friends who would not normally eat this type of nutrient simply beloved it, I accept fabricated it 2x in 3 weeks already. I have added some beef boulion cubes to requite it more season, but all together it is a Awesome DISH

Delicious, quick,& piece of cake! Definitely a family unit favorite and goes quick! Volition make again for sure.
08/17/2011
Always, always a striking, whether I'm at home or for pot luck. I never employ celery or onion, just the veggies, for my kids' sakes. I cook a separate, smaller dish for my vegetarian, using her Morning Star crumbles, but both kids beloved it and get dorsum for seconds every fourth dimension.
01/04/2007
I loved this. I added an extra can of soup. Perfectly simple.
xi/fourteen/2014
I made this & halved it crusade there are simply ii of usa. My hubby is a picky eater. He had seconds & said the rest is luncheon tomorrow. I just used salt, pepper,&garlic pulverization to season. All those veggies flavors melded together very well. We will have this again.
02/14/2008
My family loved this recipe. I used the cream of mushroom soup instead of veggie soup though. My picky eater sons ate it and my spanish husband who unremarkably won't eat my "condolement foods". This was such a sucess and for once I didn't accept to brand 3 different dinners. I am excited about this and I can't tell you how the leftover would be...there is none!!!
01/xix/2004
Pretty darn good. My husband made it and added some corn. The kids ate it, and then this recipe is a keeper.

We love information technology and brand it all the time, I'm And then glad I institute this recipe!
12/10/2013
Delicious..put my own spin past using chili meat and footing beef. I likewise used a few boxes of scallop potatoes, left out the celery and thyme, and used foam of mushroom soup instead of veggie soup, cajun seasonings, and extra, extra veggies. Husband loved it!
x/13/2010
This is one of condolement foods. The remainder of the family seems to really like this besides. I add lots of garlic, I usually utilize cream of mushroom and some times I add veggies canned or frozen. Yum yum
02/19/2002
I made this for my hubby and he thinks it is pretty good. I think the celery the recipe calls for is unecessary- at that place was plenty of celery in the soup. I recollect if I make information technology once again I will get with the other people's suggestions of using frozen mixed vegetables and beef broth. I thought the thyme was perfect and I put fifty-fifty more than the recipe required and it wasn't also stiff.
11/08/2008
Only got done eating this. I've e'er made shepherds pie westward/ foam of mushroom soup simply thought I'd endeavor this. This way is SOO much better. I browned the hamb. in an electic skillet and added the vegetable soup to it. I omitted the celery for personal preference. I fabricated instant mashed potatoes and put them correct on elevation of the hamb/soup mix. Topped with cheese slices and put the cover on for a few min. till the cheese melted. Yummy!!!!
ten/eleven/2002

08/27/2001

04/28/2006
It was easy to make, but the thyme was very overwhelming and the soup flavored overwhelmed the beefiness. Information technology wasn't bad, merely non for me. Very easy to make if in a blitz though.

Turned out amazing!
08/03/2010
Made this with adjustments & turned out great! I used ground turkey instead of beef, since I don't eat beef. Also used a tin of mixed veggies, and omitted the celery. There were a lot of veggies in the meat mixture. I also substituted a can of vegetarian vegetable soup for regular veggie soup. Used 4 cps. prepared instant mashed potatoes. Per my husband's suggestion, put about a 1/2 tsp. of chicken base (paste) & 1/4 cp. of water to add together flavour since I had used ane 1/ii lbs. of ground turkey.
